Monthly Round-Up | August

Eat and Drink
Plum Tucker, Red Hill

Its been a while since Jess and I have shared a day off together and this August (much like last August) we took advantage of our state's show holiday. We stumbled across Plum Tucker in Red Hill after finding our desired destination in Paddington over booked. This cafe was pleasantly surprising for both of us. I had a delicious interpretation of Báhn mì with their outstanding home made chicken pâté. Jess also enjoyed a delicious lunch of avocado, pumpkin smash and haloumi on sourdough.

If either of us are in the Red Hill area again and are looking for a delicious meal I doubt we'd hesitate at where to go. Great service combined with high quality, yet affordable meals, is always a winner.

Review | Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner

Hi lovelies! So recently I have been taking a break from my daily black liquid eyeliner. However after this purchase my love has been firmly rekindled. The problem I had with a lot of cheaper liner options was that they began to fade or flake throughout the day.

Playlist | Woke Up

Happy Wednesday, lovely people. It's been one of those weeks where all of my down moments I ache for the music I listen to to lift my spirits. This is very much a dance/remix collection full of the jumpier tracks from some of my favourite artists.

Starting with Kimbra's new single Miracle from her new album The Golden Echo (more to come on that later). It is such a happy-go-lucky dance track that brings a disco to even the dullest of days.

I hope this selection brigs a little bit more joy to what, for me, is turning out to be a flat out hump day.

Happy listening!

OOTD | Ragged Priest

Jumper Ragged Priest / Skirt Vintage / Shoes Nike Air Propels

Hi lovelies! So with winter winding down, I've slowing been able to wear some slightly less practical pieces of clothing. Enter the cropped jumper. I've had this one for some time now. Whilst it's handy for layering underneath coats, with trousers on cold days, it also means that the sleeves don't get shown off.

Nails | Maybelline Forever Strong Gel Nail Colour

It is no secret that when Priceline puts on a good sale, I rock up with bells on and my wallet at the ready. The last week or so has seen all Maybelline New York products at half-price and I picked up quite a few goodies. Included in my haul were these three shades from the new (to Australia) Forever Strong range. With the discount applied these babies came down to less than $4 (normally $8) which my impulse-buying self thought (and still think) is a great bargain.

Hair | Crown Braid

Hello lovelies! So after having short hair for quite some time I have really been enjoying being able to play around with plaited hairstyles. I learnt to braid by playing hair dresser to my younger sister. I've been loving this hairstyle to keep my hair out of my face during long uni days. And you don't have to worry about any tension headaches.

OOTD | Rekindled Love

Shift dress - Can You Keep a Secret / Anorak - Gorman / Belt - thrifted / Loafers - Shag Vintage / Bangle - gifted and not branded

Hello spring, it's ever so nice to see you peeking around the corner. I wait all year from this kind of weather and it's very slowly creeping into the end of winter.

I am again rocking my favourite loafers which I hope to get as much wear out of before it's too hot for leather shoes in the summer.

The denim anorak you see is from my favourite designer, Gorman, and has seen far too little wear since I purchased it. It is a little bit too oversized and can be kind of awkward to wear but it still has me head over heels for it's casual-chic charm. It's been too cold to wear it this winter but I will definitely be letting it see more sunshine when spring rocks around.

I picked this simple summer dress up in a sale at my favourite vintage store, Can You Keep a Secret? a few months back and have never really worn it either. Ditto for the belt which I think I found thrift shopping one day.

I will definitely going to make more use of these garments, especially the anorak, this spring. I love the combination of a light block coloured jacket with a cutesy print like the gum-nut/eucalyptus on this dress.

Happy hump-day!

OOTD | Gatsby's Girl

Lace Dress Vintage / Black Slip Dress MinkPink / Shoes UNIF Heathers Boots

Hi lovelies! This dress makes me feel like such a princess. It was a vintage gem that I found for a mere $20 at one of my favourite antique centres. Considering that it is in such good condition it was a complete bargain.

Recipe | Bacon Sprouts and Yam Feta Mash

My mother did not like brussels sprouts and therefore I never had them growing up. I was exposed to their negative image but had no real reason to hate them. Only in the last week have I actually plucked up the courage to try, and cook, the underrated (until recent times) little gems and I am totally converted. They're delicious, nutritious and everything in between. After talking about them for a few days with different people I coined up my own version of a very classic way to serve brussels sprouts. I hope you like it!

Serves 2
Ingredients
1 yam/purple sweet potato, roughly chopped into small pieces
150g short cut bacon, cut into strips and halved
1tsp  ground paprika
11 approx. brussels sprouts, washed and sliced
1 lemon, juiced
small bunch of baby heirloom carrots
50g lemon marinated feta
salt and cracked pepper
olive oil

In  a small saucepan, place chopped yam and cover with water. Place on a medium to high heat, cover and bring to the boil. Remove lid and let it boil until soft to touch with a fork.

Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a non-stick fry pan over a medium to high heat. Coat the bacon with paprika and cook until crispy.

In a bowl, toss sliced brussels sprouts with salt, pepper and lemon juice. Add to the fry pan with the bacon. The bacon grease and any remaining olive oil will replace the traditional butter used when cooking the sprouts.

Add the heirloom carrots to the pan and cook with the sprouts and bacon.

Drain the boiled yams and transfer to a bowl. With a fork, smash the yams with most of the feta (leaving some for garnish) until they form a mash consistency.

By now the brussels sprouts and carrots should be ready to serve. Plate up with the mash and garnish with your remaining feta. Season with salt and pepper.

Happy Sunday eating!

OOTD | Miss Scarlet

Jumper MINKPINK / Shorts UNIF / Shoes (not pictured) Nike Air Propels

Hi lovelies! Erin and I had the most lovely public holiday this Wednesday. We happened upon a cafe that did the most delicious breakfast, and then headed back to her house for a photo taking session.

Light-wash waisted and cuffed jeans - thrifted / white collared button-up - thrifted / embroidered pink cardigan - vintage via Ra Ra Superstar / 'Grandpa' loafers - vintage via Shag Vintage / The Jackson Sunglasses by *MKL Accessories - Karmaloop

Here I am again presenting you with the epitome of my style, all totally second hand (minus the sunglasses). I think I will again try to convince you of how well shopping second-hand can suit any, and every, human and their individual style. Aside from the very obvious societal and environmental benefits (reduce, reuse, recycle people!) there are major benefits in regards to personal styling efforts.

UNIF Six 66 Swimsuit / Quay Sunglasses / Sunflower Choker / MINKPINK Midi Skirt

Hi lovelies! So although it's still pretty cold at the moment in Brisbane it definitely won't be long until I find myself back on the beach. I've been trawling through websites looking for a piece or two to add into my summer wardrobe.

Skin | Winter Skin Essentials #2

Yep, you guessed it, this is another post about how I keep my skin thoroughly moisturised during the harsh dry weather that winter brings. As I get older I definitely realising how much moisture my skin needs. My skin gets a pretty harsh treatment in my day to day life; overly hot shower, drying face cleansers, working with my hands in and out of water, and even licked lips in the wind. I've done another post reviewing my favourite hand creams which you can view here. This post will focus on more all-round products that you can use to nourish any dry patches you have needing attention.
