How-To | Temporary Hair Chalk

Unless you've been living under a rock recently, you'll have noticed that temporary hair colour has been a big trend recently. Many a hair care company have been releasing coloured chalk promising vibrant, temporary colour. However, these retail upwards of $10 for one colour. Having a strict uniform code I didn't want to sink a lot of money into something I could only use infrequently. Thankfully eBay came to my rescue where you can pick up a pack starting from $2.99

I couldn't find the exact pack I used, but they all work in much the same way. Find out how they work best after the jump.

1. Separate your hair into sections: this will make it easier to get an even colour

2. Choose your colours: choosing a mixture of different tones will give the colour more dimension. For the above photo I used a combination of the hot pinks and pale pinks. This is where the larger packs will come in handy.

3. Make the hair you want to colour damp: you don't want the hair soaking wet, just damp enough that the colour can transfer easily. This also makes the process a lot less damaging on the hair.

4. Rub the colours in: I ran the chalk towards the ground as this is much more gentle on your hair. Place the chalk between your hair and fingers. Your hands will end up very colourful after this process so make sure you keep that in mind. Make sure to cover both sides of your hair for the best effect.

5. Repeat until done: you can also run your coloured fingers though your hair to transfer colour if you feel the need.

Personally I didn't experience any transfer of the colour, but please bear in mind that my hair is short, and I was wearing black that day. If you're worried about staining your clothing, then I suggest either tying up longer hair, or setting the colour with hairspray.

Sadly the pink has all gone now. I used a clarifying shampoo to wash out my hair and the colour came out really well. There is a slight tinge of pink left but unless you were looking for it I doubt you would notice it. If you're concerned about permanent staining i would suggest using a lighter colour, or doing a test on a less visible section of your hair.

Obviously the results will vary based on your hair colour. My hair is a very light blonde, particularly at the ends. I haven't had the chance to test them out on darker hair, but I imagine the results would be less vibrant. That being said you could always choose a cheap pack and test it out without breaking the bank.

For optimum results pair with a co-ordinating lip or is that just me?

Will you guys be giving this a go?
